Musician Larry Vannatta encourages teachers to let kids express themselves
Giselle Wedemire/Intern Reporter,  Monday, September 3, 2012
Though Milo-area-based country musician Larry Vannatta graduated from County Central High School (CCHS) in 1978, he received his first school award last Thursday at the sixth annual Palliser Wall of Fame induction ceremony.

"I know it took me 50 years - I've never gotten an award in school, but I finally got it," Vanatta said during his speech at the

ceremony.

More than 900 Palliser staff, friends and families were in attendance at the ceremony, which was part of the Opening Day Celebration for Palliser Regional Schools at Vulcan's Cultural-Recreational Centre.

Vannatta was one of four inductees honoured this year for their outstanding achievements in their particular fields.

In addition to Vannatta, other honoured inductees included Olympic skater Jason Turner, Dr. David Tano, and Lethbridge

Herald photographer Ian Martens - all of whom attended Palliser schools and have since gone on to achieve remarkable goals.

A self-taught musician and songwriter, Vannatta said in his speech that music became his creative outlet primarily because it allowed him to express himself in ways that he never could in mandatory school essays.

Though he admitted that school was difficult for him as he was never the best at spelling, he found that he excelled in music despite never taking music lessons and his inability to read music.

In his career as a musician, during which he has received Juno Awards nominations in 1992 and 1993 as well as the Songwriter of the Year award from the European Country Music Association in 2011, Vannatta has found that education is a constant and lifelong journey.

Echoing the school board's motto of "Dream and believe, learn and achieve," he implored the teachers of Palliser Regional Schools to continue their efforts to seek out the talents and passions of their kids to help them find and reach their dreams.

"As a songwriter, it is my role to express myself emotionally with music," he said.

"Let those kids in school express themselves whether they're good at this or that because if you look for the abilities in those kids, it's amazing what they can do."

Colleen Deitz, vice-chair of Palliser's school board, personally nominated Vannatta because she said his achievements beyond his days at CCHS have "warranted him the committee's recognition."

Window On The West Performers

Larry Vanatta

Larry Vannatta is a country music recording artist and award-winning song writer from Milo, Alberta, Canada. He is a two-time Canadian Juno nominee and was awarded the songwriter of the year award by the European Country Music Association in 2011 and was a nominee for best male artist and fan choice award by the Association of Country Music in Alberta in 2012. Always the consummate entertainer, his shows range from three piece acoustic acts to full five piece shows – performing original toe-tapping melodies, smooth country folk ballads, sharing stories about his songs and rural family roots. With his smooth vocal talents; award-winning, song-writing skills and professionalism, Larry's songs are must-hear music and his live performances are a must to see and experience.

Larry’s latest twelve song album, Working Class Man, has just been released in 2012. This is his “stunning” debut solo album (long overdue). The album is filled with Larry’s smooth vocals and powerful lyrics that will easily relate to the everyday listener. The title track, “Working Class Man” will be his first Canadian single off the album and was released on RDR promotion Feb 2012. Pre-released singles promoted by Ross Allen on Hillcrestcds have gone out across Europe. Tracks “Paradise”, Country Junkie", "Sixteen Tons" are already proven winners topping most major charts throughout Europe. Working Class Man will be the next Larry Vannatta European single release set for April 2012 and is the featured song on Hillcrestcds. Accompanying the songs will be the video which is available in Canada and Europe.

“Quotes” "Vannatta’s live performances are salt of the earth, grass roots, pure entertainment. Toe tapping country music. "Festival Coordinator, Camron Noyes for Alberta North and South Country fairs.

"Quotas" “Larry Vannatta has been performing at our Calgary Stampede events for the past three years, at Shaw GMC, Sunridge Nissan, and CMP Motors. His professionalism and live performance is second to none. It really has shown in our attendance with each year more and more people are come out to our events.” World and Professional Chuck wagon Driver; Jason Glass

Larry is a born and raised Albertan and comes from a musical back ground that he gives full credit to his mom. “When I started my first band Straight Clean & Simple, the best musician I could find was my mom, who ended up playing piano in my band for 18 years. Not too many mother, son bands that I can recall”. Since those early beginnings Larry has taken those strong family values, experience and added them along with his song writing skills and musical friends. He has gained many friendships with fellow musician, peers and artist over the years and employs these musical friends in his band. “I am really lucky to get to do what I love to do, write songs, play music
